THE TRUTH ABOUT DIAMOND CERTIFICATES.
Diamond grading reports have become an extremely important part of the diamond sale.
The seller uses them as selling tools, and the buyer uses them to compare and contrast without seeing the loose diamonds. The hazard in this system is the lab report having too much weight in the transaction.
A small amount of time spent comparing actual loose diamonds is a great educational tool. You will very quickly learn that there are variations among diamonds that are not indicated on the paper.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and many diamonds that may not be perfect on paper are beautiful in person–other diamonds may look perfect on paper, but not so exceptional in person.
In the past, GIA went through a lab scandal where four people were fired for “violating ethics” of the lab. We translated this to mean “fixing” the reports to favor the seller, since it was in response to a lawsuit claiming just that. This is the reason every loose diamond should be viewed and compared in person. Any loose diamond seller who claims any diamond is superior because of the “certification” it comes with, is giving a false sense of security. There isn’t any grading lab giving a guarantee on their opinion. The entire back page is devoted to a long disclaimer about how it is NOT a guarantee.
Of course, we sell loose diamonds with grading reports—the difference is that we personally guarantee the grades of the loose diamonds we sell. We offer all our customers several days to have their loose diamond checked by an independent GIA graduate gemologist. If he/she doesn’t agree that the diamond is what we guaranteed (or better), you can bring it back for a full refund on the diamond within 7 days. It is important to us that you, as the customer, are happy with your purchase for years to come.
